Holly Crap! Holly Crap! Holly Crap!
This move was fucking amazing!
This is the best movie that I've seen in a long time. It was original, and well made. The story was well told, and the characters were well developed. They casting was spot on, and the music and choreography were PERFECT! I really can't say enough good things about this movie. I think this movie perfectly mixed all the wonderful things about stage performances with all the strengths of film.
As you can probably guess, I went and saw The Greatest Showman, and I absolutely loved it. Leaving the theater, I had the urge to sing, and dance, and I have never missed being in musicals more. I was so pumped that I was practically bouncing.
I also liked that they didn't try to make PT Barnum out to be this perfect being that never did the wrong thing. The fact of the matter is that, for much of the movie, he wasn't a very good person. He may have stumbled upon something good, but he made most of his decisions out of selfishness and he prayed on other people's insecurities to get ahead. I know almost nothing about the real man, but I enjoyed the dramatized story they told and the arch that his character went through. By the end of the movie, he actually was making good decisions and that was nice to see whether it was true to the actual man or not.
By far, my favorite part about the movie was the music and choreography. I still cannot get over how much I loved the music. I've been listening to in on YouTube basically non-stop since I saw it. The music was uplifting and the percussive beats got my heart pumping. The dancing was all so well done, too. Nobody was dancing independently. Every movement and action was directly tied to somebody else's. I can't imagine how many times they had to rehearse in order to get it all right. I have images in my head of some pretty hilarious bloopers where one person stepped wrong and the whole thing fell apart. Having been on stage doing things that were far less intricate than this, I know how difficult it can be. But this cast made all of it look effortless.
Not to mention the fact that it held a message that we all need right now. With all the fear and hate spreading through the world, it is good to have a reminder that being different is okay. There is a place for everyone in this world. All people can have a home and a family, its just that sometimes they aren't the family you were born into. I got incredibly lucky; I was born into a wonderful family and our lives have been mostly blessed up until this point. But, I am also a big proponent of the found family. There are plenty of people in my life. who are not actually related to me, that I consider to be a part of my family. These people love and accept me for who I am, and I couldn't be more grateful to them.
The point is that there were a lot of characters in this movie that were looked down on by society and used by their employer. In spite of that, they created a place for themselves and made a family. They chose not to let what other people said about them define their lives. There are a lot of people in the world right now that are in pain and are being treated horribly. If this movie helps just one of them to feel stronger and to fight for their right to live, then it is already better than a lot movies coming out right now.
I've heard that there are people who dislike this movie because it isn't historically accurate or because they don't like how certain people were depicted. While I do understand that argument, I look at this as more historical fiction than anything else. The best part about really well done historical fiction is that it uses a historical lens to tell a story that is relevant to us today. In that respect, I think this movie did exactly what it intended to do.
I know this post has been super gushy and fan-girly. I just really wanted to talk about how good seeing this movie made me feel. After the last post, I figured talking about something a little lighter and happier wouldn't be a bad thing. I've got a few ideas I'm working on for some interesting blog posts coming up. For the moment, my plan is to publish a new post every other week, so keep an eye out for that.
